Ivo M. Ferreira

Ivo M. Ferreira was born in Lisbon in 1975 in the bosom of a family of actors; thus, he grew up with theatre all around him and was actually initiated as an actor at a young age with some of the best Portuguese stage directors and in dance with Madalena Victorino.

His taste for cinema also started very early and he soon decided that to be his career path.

After completing the course of Image and Audiovisual Communication at Escola de Artes António Arroio in Lisbon, he spent a short stint at the London Film School and then enrolled in the University of Budapest, a course he eventually he interrupted to be able to travel.

In a trip to Asia, he landed in Macau where he produced and directed his first film, the creation documentary, O HOMEM DA BICICLETA – DIÁRIO DE MACAU (The Man of the Bicycle – Macau Diary), co-directed with António Pedro which granted him several prizes and an invitation from the EXPO98 Lisbon to direct his second film, O QUE FOI? (What Was?), that also awarded him several accolades such as the Youth Talent Prize at the 7th Short Film Competition in Vila do Conde, Portugal, and a selection for the 53rd Locarno Film Festival.

Since then he has been a full time director.

Now he works with the producers O SOM E A FURIA in his biggest project ever, CARTAS DA GUERRA (Letters from War), a biographic film about the writer António Lobo Antunes when, back in 1971, he joined the Portuguese Colonial War in Angola as a doctor. In the meantime, he is preparing a new project in Macau and will direct 3 films for the European Capital of Culture – Guimarães 2011.

He works with simplicity, commitment and freedom.
